Okay, so, I kind of want to get back into regular posting again. Ask me questions! Give me topics!

Today's thought: "oh, god, Kurt Wimmer wrote the Point Break reboot"

I started my first mystery knit along of 2014 last week and just finished up clue 1 (of 5). Laura Nelkin, the designer, created a MKAL club for 2014 that I joined. You get 4 patterns and all the materials. You can also just buy the patterns, but if you're not part of the club you won't get the 4th one until she releases it separately, usually after some amount of time has passed.

Some people don't like kits because, in a way, it's limiting your creativity for picking out colors and fibers, etc. Sometimes I want to do that, but sometimes I don't. With something like a MKAL, especially when I'm pretty sure it'll be a shawl, I like having the kits because then I know that the materials definitely go together. Plus, I'm crap at picking out coordinating colors.

Laura does a good job of suggesting several different yarn brands, though, which is nice if I wanted to do it again and didn't have access to the default materials.

Anyway, this one is called Magpie, which just sounds odd to my ears, even though I know it's a bird.

I made my Ravelry page public, hopefully you can see it if you so desire.

My Magpie progress.

Inspired by kg, I present to you some reading information. I've "fallen out of" reading of late, which is a shame because it's generally pretty darn fun. ;) But, I have this habit of getting into hobbies that aren't terribly compatible with each other. I've been reading more, though, and hoping to ramp up a bit more, too.

Recently Read (interestingly, these are both books from the most recent book club I'm in)

Books in my "to be read soon" notional queue
danakate: (Default)
I had a discussion with my BF about "Where's Waldo?" type books and he described to me a book from his childhood, but he can't recall the name. Maybe one of you fine folks know?

The description went like this:
"When I was young, my school library had this book I can never remember the name of. It was a book of crimes, illustrated in Edward Gorey style. Basically, they challenged you to find the evidence on one page and then on the next, revealed it. That was my favorite, it was beautiful and full of detail."

One example he remembers: "Basically it had a burglar with an empty pocket watch chain and you'd have to find where he dropped his watch to discover how he'd gotten away. And the page was huge and monochrome so it sorta blended into the infinite detail of the scene."

So, it sounds like an illustrated "one minute mystery"/original pixel searching activity. ;)

Anyone have any ideas or other places I could ask?

To those of you starting NaNoWriMo 2012 today, good luck! I'll be joining you crazy folks soon, I just have some other stuff to do, first. :3

So, as "research" for my NaNo story, I pose a few questions for those of you out there who love libraries, books, bookstores, etc.

1. What do you look for in a library?
2. What kinds of things make a library really neat or really sexy for you?
3. Whether you have them or not, are there any really special/awesome books that you think should be in someone's personal library?
4. Is there a library out there you'd pilgrimage to? (multiple are fine)
5. What do you look for in a bookstore?
6. Is there a bookstore out there you'd pilgrimage to? (multiple are fine)
7. What's your favorite physical aspect of a book?
8. Have you ever picked a book purely for its physical characteristics and not for its content? If so, what was it and what about the book made you get it?

I think that's it.

Note: Yeesh, sorry for the delay—AGAIN. Hopefully I'll have finished Season 2 and started on Season 3 before Season 4 starts, but one never knows. Also, I have another big bang fic in the works for this fandom, so this little series will take a little break as I work on it. I do still plan on finishing out the season at minimum! An infinite number of thanks to vegarin for the excellent beta services. And thanks to you guys for being awesome and leaving feedback, etc. I do notice and it is appreciated.

Note: Sorry for the delay again. Now that Season 3 has finished airing, maybe I’ll actually get these Season 2 snippets done and get started on Season 3. Ahaha, who am I kidding? Slow output is slow. In any case, we’re entering a stretch of episodes that don’t have much to offer Nell/Callen-wise, which means I have to make up more. Not necessarily a bad thing, but anyway. I know that on the other side of the slow episodes are a couple of awesome ones. So, patience, virtue, yadda yadda yadda. I can’t thank vegarin enough for reviewing this and offering some insights. The first draft was quite lacking and hopefully this offers some appropriate additions. I hope you guys enjoy it! I really appreciate and love all the feedback you guys leave. Y’all are awesome.

No, not like that, get your mind out of the gutter. ;)

Signups for the Het Big Bang 2012 challenge have opened up and will be until May 17. Do I sign up this year? Last year I did and ended up with a pretty awesome (i.e. I still like it) NCIS: LA fic.

Do I sign up for the stress and anxiety that could lead to something awesome again? Hmm...

Note: My apologies for taking so long with this one. I’m not sure why I had such massive writer’s block, but there it is. Thank you all for the encouraging feedback, it means a lot! Once again, many thanks to my lovely beta vegarin who catches the bits that need fixing and makes my fic better.

Dyeing

So, Easter brought about the normal slew of Easter-related fic on the Interwebs. I just realized this morning why most of it was irking me for no apparent reason.

Pretty much every single author referred to applying dye to eggs as "dying." Last I checked, "dying" is not interchangeable with "dyeing." Has that changed? Am I being annoyed for no reason?

Note: I was hoping to get more chapters out a little quicker but that didn’t quite work out with this one. This piece is longer than the rest, too, and gave me quite a few issues--it seemed to take a life of its own and all my planning kind of went out the window. An infinite number of thanks to vegarin for helping me through them!

Click for larger food porn.

I baked this weekend. :3

Crispy Almond Thins - most drizzled with chocolate

Homemade Oreos - I didn’t bother trying to make them the right size so they’re kind of huge and like whoopie pies. Also, I used organic sugar, which has a much larger granule and it made the cookies way more brittle than they should have been. Whoops.

Banana Walnut Bread

6-strand Braided Challah - I’m quite pleased with the color on this one.

Note: So, this was originally going to be something else and then it turned into "Paperwork." Again, this episode didn't really give me too much to work with directly, so I had to go the indirect route. I'm so sorry. :D Many thanks to vegarin who does a fantastic job of pointing out the little things. (Once again, I put a little episode summary at the end.)

Note: My apologies for the slowness of my output. I hope to be a little quicker now. This episode didn't really give me much to go on. Le sigh. And the plot bunnies keep on coming. Latest one: NCIS: LA/Iron Man crossover. Nell vs. Tony intrigues me. Hetty vs. Tony makes me laugh.

Someday, I'll write all the fic I want to write. Someday.

I really ought to decide what I put on this blog. Maybe I'll move my craft stuff over here since my personal site appears to be overrun by Russians wanting an account. :D

Also, need userpics.
